Duration - 3 Months

Frequency - once a week for 2 hours.

What the course consists of : 3 levels which are Introductory, Basic and Intermediate.

How does the course go : We start with foundation building techniques of belly dance followed by more techniques and then choreography. New belly dance techniques are taught on every session followed by choreography.

What would you achieve by the end of the course : To sum it up you would learn 3 professionally choreographed belly dance sequences on 3 Arabic numbers. You would be learning almost 45 percent of the techniques that there is to learn in overall professional belly dancing and you would learn this in the form of 3 professionally choreographed sequences on 3 Arabic numbers. You would also learn how to variate your moves and techniques on all forms of belly dance music - be it Arabic, Egyptian , Turkish , Lebanese etc..

1] In case you miss your session you could attend in an alternate existing belly dance beginner's batch at your center at Belly Dance Institute Mumbai.
2]  Also as an institute we allow you to attend the belly dance beginner's course at belly dance institute Mumbai at all our centers which are Colaba, Bandra, Khar and Andheri West and in all the beginner's belly dance existing batches. So you could attend up to even 6 batches in a week.
3] You could even change your beginner's belly dance batch at any time to your existing center or even change to another center.

7 Things About Your 1ST Belly Dance Performance


I, Ritambhara Sahni director at Belly Dance Institute Mumbai have been performing and relishing the spotlight ever since I was a little girl. I went on to choreographing school and college shows to judging them as well. Soon after, I went on to open Ritambhara Sahni’s Institute for the Performing Arts and later Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni, where we conduct Haflas (Belly dance Parties) and HIP-NOSIS (Belly Dance events). After months of training, the girls at the various levels have the opportunity and platform to perform like  professional divas. Now, you certainly want to put your best foot forward and let it be a memorable experience which you can reflect upon with fondness. To achieve that, there are certain things that good dancers do differently and that set them apart from the rest. With ample experience up my sleeve in not only being a dance performer myself, but also training young dancers, let me share a thing or two I’ve learnt about what many won’t tell you during your first performance.


1] The road less traveled is the most rewarding. 
Copying an already done dance sequence with the simplest techniques is too easy. The most hypnotizing performances are those that challenge the viewer and leave them captivated. How do you achieve that? Simple. Play with your strengths and yet clip in a concept that you find most challenging. While you ponder over it, remember the difference between staying where you are on the familiar path and the growth factor is achieved in facing the unknown. Practice till you attain perfection and on the day of the performance, I assure you, it will be so gratifying. Keep pushing even when the going gets tough. And it will get tough before getting a lot easier and I , Ritambhara Sahni have surly experienced that myself and today i run Belly Dance Institute Mumbai.

2] The many hats a dancer wears 
I, Ritambhara Sahni say this to all my students at Belly Dance Institute Mumbai that when you are performing on stage, you wear the many hats of a true artist. Standing out in a crowd is not merely the capacity to dance, but the stage becomes your canvas and you paint your story. Belly dance is the art of skillfully moving every muscle in the body to the beats of the music, but, the stage is set on fire by the skillful performers who can channel their impulses into an innately expressive dance. So, to heighten the effects of your first performance, aim at owning the stage while blending dance with the fine arts of music and expression. Belly dance accentuates the strength of a woman and celebrates her spirit. This is amplified by your expression and body language which must be included in the choreography.

3] Confidence comes from a lot of practice. 
There really is no shortcut to being confident about your performance and there’s no way you’re going to leave your audience spellbound, if you can’t gain a steady momentum in your dance practice. Apart from practicing in front of the mirror, videotaping your choreography is also a great idea. You might cringe and be overly critical about yourself, but its with assurance that I, Ritambhara Sahni assert, you will get better and master the choreography with precision. And most importantly, all those hours in that practice and critical analyzing by your instructor at Belly Dance Institute Mumbai can be most rewarding. Everything makes complete sense when the music begins to play, the crowd starts cheering and you’re dancing with a heightened confidence.

  4] Add a little more of mental rehearsal. 
I, Ritambhara Sahni swear by this as well and i tell all my students at my institute BElly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni to definately do this as mental rehersal is greater has to always superceed the physical one for the physical one to be a sucess .So, apart from practicing the choreography, it is a great idea to have a copy of the song playing repeatedly on the music player. Wear the headphones and let it play on your phone while you work or are standing in a queue, listen to it in the car on your way home from work or let it play while you lie down to rest. Its important to familiarize yourself with every beat of the music and mentally rehearse the steps. Feel the music and let it dictate the expressions you wear. Practice the choreography in your minds space and take note of the portions you can’t remember what comes. Mental rehearsals are elementary and play a pivotal role in anticipating what comes next. Try this in consonance with the practice sessions and the improvement will be noticeable.

5] Gearing up for the performing night or The Day
The attire for the performance could already be chosen or you may have been given the flexibility to wear what you choose. Either way, its quintessential to not just try the outfit but also rehearse with it in order to identify the revealing bust line you aren’t comfortable with or a belt that slips down the waist as per the choreography. So, to avoid any mishaps and make the night memorable for all the good reasons, it is important you overrule the little things that can take unnecessary precedence. Also, take a look at the stage and imagine your choreography in front of the spectators apart from visiting the backstage and taking a mental note of your entry.

6] The final preparations
I, Ritambhara Sahni tell all my students at my institute - Belly Dance Institute Mumbai to create a CHECKLIST. Now, that you know what you’re wearing and how the stage looks, make a list of all that you will need to make your night perfect. If you aren’t familiar with makeup, visit a mall and let them help you with the ways you could wear it. Don’t forget to buy them, its only fair. Or else, book an appointment at a salon and let them make you look like the diva you are. Purchase safety pips, hair accessories, a kaftan or robe you could wear over the outfit and  all the styling accessories you would need. Be certain the music you’re dancing on is burnt on a CD or uploaded on a pen drive. Last but not the least, pack everything in a bag while you tick it off your checklist.

7] It can get addictive.
The night you were waiting for with rapt anticipation will come and go before you know it. But allow me to warn you, your first may not be the last because it can get addictive and i Ritambhara Sahni experienced that after my 1st performance as a child. Well, not in literal terms, because dance is far from being addictive medically. When the spotlights are on, and as you wait for the familiar music to start playing, your heart might skip a beat as the crowd cheers on. The rush you get from the happy endorphins can get addictive. With my years of experience, one of the things i have learnt is that endorphins are wonderful chemicals in the brain that are not only responsible for the positive moods but also act like a painkiller. So, even after a grueling dance rehearsal or a great performance, dancers don’t feel a stinging pain and an aching muscle but instead dance on with happy feet. The exhilarating experience to perform and have all eyes on your ravishing performance can leave you wanting for more. The HIP-NOSIS - MUMBAI sessions at my institute - Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni happen at frequent intervals and so you can go all out and own the stage once again, especially now that you know how to. :)

I've been taking Ritambhara Sahni's belly dance classes in Mumbai for about a year now, and I've learned so many beautiful belly dance techniques and amazing choreographies, as well as plenty of history and concepts.  Ritambhara Sahni's belly dance institute Mumbai also has its belly dance show called Hip-nosis Mumbai. I was a part of belly dance institute Mumbai's belly dance show as well. Although each piece  of belly dance choreography was superbly performed, the Sophia Bhabha Auditorium was the ideal setting for displaying such talent. Resembling a Paradise for great godesses, the stage area was so beautifully lit up, the costumes and the colour and the beautiful noise of the belly dance belts that each student had worn on stage to perform was just so amazing. The costumes and the belly dance belts bought a new glitter to the stage each time. We all students feel soconnected to the art of belly dance just wearing and belly dancing with our belly dance belts. I love my belly dance belt so much and i am as much in love with my belly dance belt as i am  in love with the belly dance art. A belly dancing belt adds more life to belly dance i feel. Belly dance institute Mumbai is a wonderful place to learn this amazing form of belly dance.

But before you commence a class there are certain things that will help knowing and also the hesitations will be kept at bay with the queries answered. 1. What's the attire at class ? 
Since the dance is a composition of techniques and form, it's best to wear a yoga pant or tracks paired with a comfortable T-shirt. It's not ideal to wear harems, pallazzos or skirts because it's important for the instructor to view your leg movements so she may guide you right. Apart from that being the elemental reason for not wearing jeans to the class, we also advise you to not wear jeans as that acts as a barrier for the leg movements and it's hindrance will make you uncomfortable learning. So, it's best to come comfortably dressed in tights or gym wear for your optimum benefit.

2. Anything to worn on the feet ? 
Belly dance is mostly practised and performed barefooted, so a footwear isn't essential. However, if your feet are sensitive, you can wear socks or peds. If that doesn't suit you either, we would suggest investing in ballet or jazz shoes to avoid discomfort.

3. Is it necessary to reveal my stomach? 
Absolutely not. At Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni, we emphasize the importance of your comfort. The choice to reveal or not solely rests on the individuals preference. A lot of students show their tummies because it makes them feel like a belly dancer and also since it's a dance involving the isolation of the torso from the lower body so it helps in understanding the movements.

4. I have no prior background in either dance or belly dance. Can I still enroll? 
Absolutely. We at Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni will mentor you through the techniques and forms. In the foundation course you will soon learn that you can dance too.


5. Performance opportunities?
You certainly do. Be a part of the exhilarating experience at our grand event HIP-NOSIS where our students from various levels come together to perform. Also, we conduct mini HIP-NOSIS events every now and then apart from HAFLAS (parties) which you must be a part of when opportunity permits.

6. Do I have to perform?
A lot of students love to learn the dance but aren't interested in performing. You don't have to perform if you don't want to. At the end of the day, to be in your comfort zone is quintessential.

7. How long will it take to learn the form? 
The first two sessions at the Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni begins as an introductory session which trains you on the techniques and forms of belly dancing. But it takes three months at our Institute in order to confidently belly dance and master the foundation techniques. We can guarantee that by the end of the first two sessions you will realize you can belly dance too and after three months you will confidently shake your hips like a belly dancer. 8. Having learnt belly dance from another place, can I continue here and directly join the higher levels?
My sincere apologies but we would suggest against continuing without having gone through our foundation levels in this Institute. This primarily is because every institute and instructor has a different way of conducting the dance classes and compiling the content for the beginners foundation course. There might be similarities in the techniques but its never the same content. On that note, at Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni, we suggest you resume in the place you began learning from or groom your foundations at our Institute. Also, we have begun workshops and levels for fusions and props which weren’t available earlier.



9. Can I belly dance at 49?
Belly dancing is for everyone. It pays no heed to age, size, shape, background, dance ability or fitness level. Irrespective of the age, it shares its benefits such as grace, coordination and flexibility with everyone. At Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni we recommend the dance for anyone above 12 years, including senior citizens. 16. How do I get certified for the levels?
The certification for the belly dance course is awarded only after the student completes all the sessions that composes the level. A complete attendance is a prerequisite and on the certification day you are critically examined on the various techniques and forms learnt. The first hour is dedicated to mastering of the techniques compiled in the course and in the next hour you will be examined on the same. You will be certified for the level  only on mastering of all the techniques and further details will be given during the initial classes.

17. Are there any physical limitations to learning belly dancing?
Though belly dancing is known for its several health benefits, it may also aggravate certain conditions. So in case you have an injury or a medical condition please consult the doctor for professional advice and notify the instructor regarding the same. We do not recommend you to join if you have sciatica, aches in the joints or pregnant without a doctor's consultation.

18. Can I take a trial session?
What we have is a trial workshop..
 However, we have compiled a series of videos that demonstrate what you stand to learn and achieve as a student in our institute. The videos that you find on the links below are performed by students in our institution and not professionals so you can get a fair idea on the knowledge you will gain as an average potential student. 19. Can I come and observe a class?
If you could prefer to visit us in order to attain a better understanding of our classes and feel the positive vibes exuded, you’re most welcome to have a peak for a couple of minutes. However, we don’t encourage observing an ongoing class for longer hours since that makes the students self conscious. So in order to avoid the disturbance in the middle of a session we would love to show you extended videos of our choreography over and above what you will see on our youtube channel, Belly Dance Institute Mumbai, that is attached herewith.

20. Can I bring my children/ friend/ relative to the class?
The children, friends and relatives who are eager to tag along are ultimately observers and the reply to this has been answered in the preceding question. We do not have a crèche or caretakers, so it is advisable to not get your children along. At the Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni, we do not encourage anyone into the class apart from our registered students

21. Can men join? Are they allowed in class?
Despite a lot of institutes being open to teaching men, we at the Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni, do not teach men. Im certain you’ll would make great belly dancers too but our institute is strictly structured around teaching women. While observers may have a peak at an ongoing session, we don’t permit any man to enter an ongoing class in any given situation. However you are always invited to watch a performance at our HIP-NOSIS event which is open to all. Here is a glimpse of our show in the link below.


22. Can I visit the studio where I would be learning? 
Yes you certainly can. I have danced my way through life, practicing dance for over 20 years now with my former institute - Ritambhara Sahni's Institute for the performing Arts and now belly dance Institute Mumbai. 

In the 2 decades that have gone by, I began with teaching urban hip hop, popping and locking, Jazz, contemporary, etc.. before delving into the world of belly dance for 11 years now after having established my Belly dance Institute Mumbai. 

Shakira took the world by storm with her graceful belly dance movements and so can you! I established the institute for belly dance in Mumbai in 2005 for all the beautiful women who yearned to learn this form of art but wondered if they ever could, would or should!
